The sensorial materials help the child sort impressions it already has. Each material deliberately isolates ONE quality — size, length, colour, weight, smell or sound — and holds everything else constant. The smelling jars look identical precisely so the nose has to decide alone. The child matches, grades and puts words to differences, practising comparison and classification. The area also lays groundwork for mathematics: grading ten blocks by size is the same mental work that later meets the decimal system.
