The Pink Tower
The Pink Tower is one of the most iconic sensorial materials in Montessori education. It consists of ten pink cubes that gradually decrease in size, from the largest at 10 cm down to the smallest at 1 cm. The child builds the tower from largest to smallest, developing their visual perception of size and dimension. By lifting and comparing the cubes — which each have a different weight — the child gains a concrete sense of difference. This work nurtures a sense of order, concentration and hand control, while indirectly preparing the child for mathematical concepts such as volume and the base-ten system.
What to look for:
- Solid wood, not hollow or plastic — the weight is part of the sensorial experience.
- Standard dimensions of 1–10 cm so the tower follows the classic proportions.
- Smooth surfaces with non-toxic, child-safe paint — look for CE/EN71 certification.
- Even, stable cubes with no sharp edges or gaps between the sides.
- If you have younger siblings at home: the smallest cube is very small — use under supervision.
At home, the tower is best kept on its own spot on a low shelf, so the child can fetch it independently, build in peace and quiet, and put it back when they are done.
