Color Tablets (Wood)
Color tablets are one of the classic sensorial materials in Montessori education. The child pairs identical shades and grades colors from dark to light, training the eye to perceive subtle differences. The work is quiet and hands-on: the child places the tablets side by side, compares them, and discovers for themselves where each shade belongs in the series. Working together gives you a natural opportunity to put words to colors — "light blue," "turquoise," or "burgundy." The material also gently lays the groundwork for color theory and creative activities.
What to look for:
- Choose tablets with a wooden frame so the child can hold the edges without touching the color surface itself.
- A matte, even finish without shiny lacquer gives more accurate shades to grade.
- Start with a few primary colors to pair, and add a grading box for shades later on.
- Check the size — child-sized tablets with rounded corners fit best in small hands.
- Look for a simple box or stand that makes it easy for the child to take out and put away independently.
At home, they work beautifully on a tray at a small table, where the child can work undisturbed at their own pace.
