Scent Matching Jars – Pairing Smells with the Nose Alone
Scent matching jars are a classic Montessori sensorial material in which the child pairs identical jars two by two — using nothing but their nose. Because all the jars look exactly the same on the outside, the sense of smell is beautifully isolated, giving it a starring role it rarely gets elsewhere. The child learns to recognise, compare and describe scents, while at the same time practising patience, concentration and orderly work: smell, search, match, check.
What to look for:
- Material: choose jars made of wood, glass or metal rather than plastic — more durable, more beautiful and nicer to hold.
- Neutral appearance: all jars should look identical on the outside, so the child follows their nose rather than colour or shape.
- Self-correcting: jars with a colour marking on the base allow the child to check their own pairs independently.
- Child-sized: small jars that fit comfortably in a child's hand, with lids that are easy to open yet stay securely closed.
- Refillable contents: jars you fill yourself (cinnamon, coffee, lavender, dried mint) keep the scents fresh and make the material reusable time and again.
- Safety: avoid strong essential oils and known allergens for the very youngest children; stick to mild, gentle scents.
At home this works beautifully at a small table: set out a few pairs at a time, with a basket ready for matched pairs. Swap the scents every now and then to keep curiosity alive.
