Wooden Coin Box with Slot

A coin box is a simple wooden box with a narrow slot in the lid, where the child drops coins or small round wooden discs through one at a time. The activity looks deceptively simple, but practises several things at once: the child aims with their hand, rotates their grip so the disc lines up with the slot, and releases at just the right moment. When the disc disappears into the box, the child also gets to explore object permanence — the idea that something still exists even when it can't be seen — and the delight of opening the box and finding it again. The short, clear-cut nature of the work is perfect for little ones who love to repeat the same thing over and over.

What to look for:

• Solid wood over plastic — warm to the touch, durable, and a pleasure to work with.
• Disc size: choose thick, round discs that are too large to swallow and easy for small fingers to grip.
• The slot should offer a little resistance but still let the disc pass through without the child having to struggle.
• Smooth edges and a non-toxic, saliva-resistant finish, since everything finds its way into little mouths at this age.
• The box should be openable so the child can empty it themselves and start all over again.

At home it works beautifully on a low shelf or at a table — set out a few discs in a small bowl alongside it and let your child work at their own pace.
