Constructive Triangles
Constructive triangles are a classic Montessori sensorial material through which children discover that all straight-edged, flat shapes can be built up from triangles. By fitting triangles together along their edges, a child can see with their own hands how a rhombus, a rectangle, a hexagon, or a larger triangle takes shape. It is geometry experienced in a concrete, hands-on way — long before words and formulas arrive. Children compare shapes, feel which sides fit together, and at the same time train their eye, hand, and concentration. The material typically comes in boxes of differently coloured triangles, sometimes with a marked edge showing where the pieces should meet.
What to look for:
- Material: choose wood over plastic — it lasts longer, sits steadily, and feels pleasant in little hands.
- Size: the triangles should be comfortably sized for small hands to grip and move.
- Quality: smooth, sanded edges so that the pieces meet precisely and the shapes come together cleanly.
- Colour marking: a clear line along the edges helps the child see how the pieces fit together.
- Storage: a sturdy box makes it easy to bring out and tidy away.
At home they work beautifully on a small mat or at a table, where the child can build in peace and quiet.
