Wooden Object Permanence Box
The object permanence box is one of the first true Montessori materials for the very youngest children. The child drops a ball into a hole, watches it disappear — and then discovers that it rolls back out through a small tray. From this simple, repeated action grows an early understanding: things still exist even when I can't see them. At the same time, the child practises their grip, hand-eye coordination, and the joy of managing something all by themselves, again and again.
What to look for:
- Solid wood with a smooth, splinter-free surface and non-toxic, water-based finishes — choose wood over lacquered plastic.
- Ball size: choose a ball that is too large to pose a choking hazard, and look for CE/EN71 certification.
- A visible tray where the ball rolls out, so the child can see for themselves the connection between the hole and the result.
- Child-sized and lightweight so that small hands can lift and carry the box with ease.
- A stable, simple design with no unnecessary sounds, lights, or loose small parts.
Place the box on a low shelf or on the floor so the child can go to it independently. Let the repetition take as long as it needs — that is precisely where the learning happens.
