Morning Dressing Battles – How to Build a Calmer Routine

SReviewed by Sara · Montessori teacher

How do I make the morning dressing routine something my child actually wants to take part in?

Preparation is everything. Help your child pick out their clothes the night before, and let them have a say in the choice. This makes it much more likely that a groggy, half-awake child will cooperate during a hectic morning.

Does your child want to choose from too many options? Narrow it down to just two outfits — and stick to those two. Hold the line. Change doesn't happen overnight; routines take time and consistency to settle in.

Remember: change rarely happens overnight — routines need practice, and all feelings are allowed even when a behaviour needs a kind limit. Follow the child, prepare the environment, and let the child do it themselves.
