Children's Hand-Washing Set
Washing their own hands is one of the first tasks a child can manage entirely by themselves. In Montessori, hand washing belongs to practical life — everyday activities that build concentration, sequencing skills, and independence. With a small pitcher to pour from, a basin, a child-sized bar of soap, and their very own towel, the child has a clear work cycle: pour, lather, rinse, dry, and hang the towel back up. Every step is visible and easy to understand, and the child can see the result of their own effort.
What to look for:
- Child-sized: the pitcher and basin should be light enough for small hands to lift and compact enough to fit on a low shelf.
- Natural materials: choose ceramic, glass, enamel, or wood over plastic — they hold up to water and feel genuine.
- Sturdy and safe: the pitcher should stand steadily, have a handle a child can wrap their hand around, and have no sharp edges.
- Just the right number of pieces: a pitcher, a basin, soap, and a small towel is plenty — too many pieces makes the activity feel cluttered.
At home, the set is given a permanent spot at the child's height, so they can fetch it, use it, and put it back entirely on their own.
