Transfer Set with Tweezers and Tongs
Transfer exercises belong to practical life in Montessori. The child moves small objects — pompoms, beads, or chickpeas — from one bowl to another using tweezers or tongs. This trains the pincer grip, hand-eye coordination, concentration, and patience — the same fine-motor skills the hand will later use to hold a pencil. The task has a clear beginning and a clear end, giving the child that wonderful feeling of completing something all by themselves.
What to look for:
- Material: choose tweezers or tongs made of wood or stainless steel rather than thin plastic — they last longer and feel better in little hands.
- Child size: the tool should be small enough that a child's hand can squeeze it together without a struggle.
- Object size: start with larger pompoms and work towards smaller beads as the grip develops. Avoid the very smallest pieces for the youngest children — they can be a choking hazard.
- Bowls and tray: low, stable bowls and a tray that frames the work area make the activity clear and inviting.
- Quality: smooth edges, no sharp seams, and ideally parts that are dishwasher safe.
At home, set everything out on a tray at the child's height so they can fetch the work and tidy it away independently.
