Montessori practical life
Montessori materials for practical life, for children aged 1–9.
Practical life is usually the first area a child meets. Real everyday tasks are scaled to the child: pouring water, buttoning, sweeping, setting the table, watering plants. The point is not to produce a little helper — these exercises build concentration, a sense of order and trust in one's own ability. They also train the hand: gripping a jug or tweezers uses the same fine motor control that later holds a pencil. The materials usually carry their own control of error — spilled water is visible, so the child can self-correct without an adult stepping in.
