Wooden Lock and Latch Board
A lock and latch board lets children practise again and again the things that fascinate them most right now: opening and closing, hooking and unhooking, sliding bolts back and forth. In Montessori this belongs to practical life — the child develops fine motor skills in the hands, eye-hand coordination, and the concentration that grows when a task has a clear goal and can be repeated at their own pace. Finally managing to get the latch into place all by themselves gives a genuine sense of achievement.
What to look for:
- Real fittings, not imitations. Choose hooks, bolts and latches made of metal that actually work, just like the ones your child encounters on gates and cupboards at home.
- Solid wood over plastic. Untreated or naturally oiled wood feels better in the hand and stands up to heavy use.
- The right number of locks. Two to four different mechanisms is plenty for the youngest children — too many steps at once can fragment concentration.
- Smooth finish and safe size. Make sure the edges are rounded, the fittings are firmly attached, and no small parts can come loose. Be present in the beginning and match your choice to your child's age.
Place the board on a low shelf or in your child's lap so they can go to it on their own whenever the urge strikes.
