Bedtime Without Tears – A Calm Nighttime Routine for Toddlers

SReviewed by Sara · Montessori teacher

How do I set up bedtime the Montessori way?

Preparation where the child gets to be part of the process. Keep a clear routine — dinner, bath, teeth brushing, reading, and then sleep — so the child knows what to expect.

Let the child choose their pajamas or which stuffed animal they want. If the child gets upset, we meet them by acknowledging that it's bedtime, while letting them know we understand how they feel and that it's completely okay. This gives the child words for their emotions in the moment.

Remember: change rarely happens overnight — routines need practice, and all feelings are allowed even when a behaviour needs a kind limit. Follow the child, prepare the environment, and let the child do it themselves.
