Wooden Learning Tower
A learning tower lets your child stand safely at counter height and take part in real everyday life — at the kitchen sink, the dough, and the washing up. In Montessori this is called "practical life": children want to join in with real tasks, not just play at them. When your child gets to rinse berries, spread their own sandwich, or pour water, they are practising fine motor skills, concentration, and the feeling of being capable and included. The tower makes that participation possible without anyone needing to lift — your child climbs up and down independently, which is itself a wonderful exercise in self-reliance.
What to look for:
- Solid wood over lacquered particleboard — it withstands climbing, spills, and years of use.
- Adjustable standing height, so the tower grows with your child from around one year old through preschool age.
- A stable, wide base with railings or side guards, so your child can step in and out without the tower tipping.
- Smooth edges and a water-based finish that can be wiped clean.
- Ideally foldable if your kitchen is small.
Place the tower next to the counter and let your child help with one simple task at a time.
