How to Support Your Child's Language Development Before They Start Talking

SReviewed by Sara · Montessori teacher

How do I support language development before my child is talking much?

The easiest thing you can do is talk to your child as much as possible. Repeat your child's sentence back correctly as a response — for example: "Yes, the ball is blue — you're right!"

Avoid correcting individual words ("it's not X, it's Y"), and don't adopt your child's mispronunciations either, even if they're adorable. Reading books together is of course wonderful and does incredible things for your child's language development.

Remember: change rarely happens overnight — routines need practice, and all feelings are allowed even when a behaviour needs a kind limit. Follow the child, prepare the environment, and let the child do it themselves.
