Phonogram Cards (Green Series)
Phonogram cards belong to the green series of language work. They come after the child has learned the individual sounds of the letters and can blend together simple, phonetically regular words. Now the child makes the discovery that Swedish often writes a single sound using several letters together — the "sj" sound, the "tj" sound, and the "ng" sound are classic examples. Each card focuses on one sound combination at a time, so that the child can see the pattern, recognise it in new words, and begin to read and spell things that are not entirely phonetic. The work builds reading confidence step by step, at the child's own pace.
What to look for:
- Choose cards with Swedish phonograms (sj, stj, skj, tj, kj, ng, gn) — not English sound combinations, which do not suit Swedish reading.
- Look for clear text in lowercase letters, ideally colour-coded according to the green series.
- Durable materials stand up to many little hands: thick laminated card or wood is better than thin paper.
- A comfortable size with rounded corners, ideally with word examples that show the sound in context.
At home, you can take one phonogram at a time, collect words that contain the sound, and read them together at the kitchen table.
