How to Set Screen Time Limits Without a Battle

SReviewed by Sara · Montessori teacher

How much screen time is okay, and how do I set limits without it turning into a fight?

Guidelines for ages 3–6 typically suggest a maximum of 1 hour per day, but quality and context matter just as much as the exact number of minutes.

Set the limit in advance, not in the moment. Decide together how long or when screen time is allowed — it's much easier to stick to a plan than to negotiate on the spot. Use a timer or a clear endpoint, like "after this episode," and give a heads-up well ahead of time with a "five minutes left" warning.

Have a clear next step ready — a game or an outdoor activity — so the transition feels less like a void.

Be consistent over time. A predictable routine tends to meet far less resistance than a boundary that shifts depending on mood or circumstance.

Remember: change rarely happens overnight — routines need practice, and all feelings are allowed even when a behaviour needs a kind limit. Follow the child, prepare the environment, and let the child do it themselves.
