How to Handle Toddler Meltdowns in the Store — Staying Calm

SReviewed by Sara · Montessori teacher

My child has a meltdown in the store or on the floor — how do I respond calmly?

Children's big feelings are completely normal. Meltdowns often happen when they were expecting something, or when they're tired and hungry. In the store, you can stay calm and wait it out — or take your child outside so they have space to settle down.

Talk through the trip beforehand: tell them what you're going to buy and what you're not going to buy. If your child is hungry, a quick snack — like a fruit pouch or a piece of fruit — can make a real difference.

Remember: change rarely happens overnight — routines need practice, and all feelings are allowed even when a behaviour needs a kind limit. Follow the child, prepare the environment, and let the child do it themselves.
