Sandpaper Numbers

With the sandpaper numbers, children can feel the shape of each digit with their fingertips before they ever pick up a pencil. The child traces each number from 0–9 with two fingers, says it aloud, and sees the shape at the same time — sight, touch, and voice all working together. The slightly rough surface provides a clear path to follow, so that the movement becomes anchored in the hand and connected to the symbol. What to look for:

• Material: choose sturdy boards in wood or thick cardboard with sandpaper that is firmly attached — not loose stickers that peel away.
• Size: the numbers should fit comfortably under a child's hand so that the whole shape can be traced in one smooth movement.
• Quality: check that the surface is evenly textured and able to withstand repeated use.
• Safety: rounded corners and non-toxic, water-based paint.
• Clarity: a single, uniform colour per board makes each number easy to distinguish.

At home, just a few minutes at a time at a small table is plenty — let your child choose a number, feel it, say it, and start spotting it out in everyday life.
