Curved Wooden Balance Board
A curved wooden balance board is one of the simplest and most enduring movement materials you can give a young child. Its curved shape means the child must find their own equilibrium — rocking, swaying, standing, sitting, or balancing on their feet. This builds gross motor skills, core strength, and body awareness at the child's own pace, with no instruction needed. In Montessori pedagogy it belongs in the movement area, where children are free to explore what their bodies can do through self-chosen, independent activity.
What to look for:
- Material: moulded wood with a water-based, non-toxic finish — avoid plastic.
- Size: a board around 70–90 cm suits most young children and will grow with them for several years.
- Weight capacity: check the stated maximum weight so it holds up when an older sibling wants a turn too.
- Surface & edges: a slip-resistant top (felt or lacquer) and smoothly rounded edges with no splinters.
- Stability: the board should sit firmly without sliding on the floor.
At home it quickly becomes wonderfully versatile: a bridge, a rocker, a slide for soft toys, or a quiet spot to sit and read. Let your child discover it freely, keep a close eye on them at first, and consider placing a mat underneath for those early sessions.
