Timeline of Life (Illustrated Chart)
The Timeline of Life is one of the cornerstones of Montessori's cosmic education. The long illustrated chart shows how life on Earth has unfolded over millions of years — from the first tiny organisms in the sea, through fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, all the way to humans. For a child aged 6–9, the abstract idea of "a very long time" becomes concrete and tangible: the child sees the sequence, grasps the whole picture and understands where humanity fits within a much larger story. The material sparks curiosity and naturally lays the groundwork for further exploration of biology, geology and history.
What to look for:
- Length and format: a proper timeline is long — often several metres — so choose one that can be rolled up or folded away for storage.
- Durable material: a laminated or thick chart will withstand being rolled out on the floor again and again.
- Clear, accurate images: look for scientifically sound illustrations with colour-coded time periods rather than lots of text.
- Low text or language-neutral: this way you and your child can put the story into your own words together as you explore each era.
- Ideally with picture cards: a "blank" version where the child places cards onto the timeline makes for wonderful independent work.
Roll it out on the floor, trace the timeline with your finger, and talk your way through the eras together.
