Multiplication Checkerboard with Beads
The Multiplication Checkerboard is one of the most beautiful mathematics materials in Montessori education. On a grid colour-coded by place value, the child lays coloured bead bars and works through long multiplication — step by step, with their hands. Instead of simply memorising an algorithm on paper, the child sees exactly where units, tens and hundreds belong, how partial products are built up, and how exchanging works. The material gives a concrete, sensory understanding of the decimal system that later supports abstract arithmetic. It suits children who are becoming confident with their multiplication tables and are curious about larger numbers.
What to look for:
- Choose wood and glass beads over thin plastic — they withstand years of use and feel good in the hand.
- Check that the colour-coding follows Montessori place-value colours (green/blue/red for units/tens/hundreds) so it matches other materials.
- Make sure the board is large enough to work on comfortably on the floor or at a table, with clearly defined squares.
- Look for a complete set with plenty of bead bars, ideally including number tiles.
- Small beads can be a choking hazard for younger siblings — store all the pieces together in one place.
At home it works best as a calm, recurring moment at the same mat or table, where the child can repeat at their own pace.
