Wooden World Map Puzzle
In Montessori, geography begins in the hands, not in a book. With a world map puzzle, the child can lift out each continent, feel its shape, and place it back in the right spot. The whole world becomes something tangible to hold, and the shapes and positions of the continents sink in through repetition — long before a traditional map starts to make sense. The knobs on each piece also gently exercise the pincer grip between thumb and index finger, which the hand will draw on later when learning to hold a pencil.
What to look for:
- Material: choose solid wood (beech or maple) over plastic, with smooth, sanded edges.
- Size: knobs sized just right for small fingers, and a sturdy base board that keeps the map from shifting.
- Colour: clear, consistent continent colours are ideal, so the map feels familiar alongside other materials at home.
- Safety: water-based, non-toxic paint and no small parts that could come loose.
- Level: a simple version without text works best to start; labels and map pins can be added when the child is ready.
Keep the map on a low shelf within easy reach, so your child can take it out independently and come back to it at their own pace.
