Bead Material for Mathematics (Bead Stair & Bead Chains)
The bead material is the heart of Montessori mathematics. When a child can hold one bead for each number, those numbers become something real and tangible — not just symbols on a page. With the bead stair, the numbers 1–9 are built up in different colours, and with the bead chains the child counts in skips of 2, 3, 5, or 10, laying the foundation for multiplication and square numbers. Children develop number sense, an understanding of base ten, and patient, self-correcting work with their hands — from the very first counting exercises right through the early school years.
What to look for:
- Choose glass beads on metal wire, or wooden beads, over loose plastic — they feel weightier, last longer, and stay securely on the string.
- Make sure the colours follow Montessori's colour-coding (1=red, 2=green, 3=pink … 10=gold), so the material works together with other Montessori resources you already have.
- A good starting point is the bead stair plus the short and long chains; you rarely need the full school set all at once.
- Check that the beads are firmly secured on the wire and that any small parts are appropriate for your child's age.
At home, this material works best on a small mat or tray, where your child can work undisturbed and count at their own pace.
