Hundred Board (1–100)
The hundred board is a classic Montessori material where the child places tiles numbered 1 to 100 into a grid, ten per row. When little hands pick up and position each tile, the number sequence becomes something concrete and visible rather than a string of words recited by heart. Children discover the patterns for themselves: how the tens reappear down each column, how numbers grow by ten going downward and by one going sideways. It builds a calm bridge between counting by rote and truly understanding how the number system fits together.
What to look for:
- Solid wood over plastic – the tiles have a satisfying weight and can withstand being dropped and used by siblings one after another.
- Clear, easy-to-read numerals – ideally engraved or well printed so they won't flake off.
- The right tile size – large enough for small hands to grip, yet fitting neatly into the squares without wobbling.
- Smooth edges and non-toxic, water-based finish – no sharp corners or splinters.
- A small box or tray for the tiles – so the tidying up becomes part of the activity and everything finds its way home afterwards.
This material is typically introduced around age 5–6 and fits naturally into the early school years. At home it works beautifully on the floor or at a table: let your child work at their own pace, and enjoy pointing out the patterns you discover together.
