Wooden Baby Walker (for first steps)
When a child pulls themselves up and takes their first steps, a sturdy baby walker offers wonderful support. In Montessori education, free movement is seen as the foundation for all other learning — a child who gets to practise balance and strength at their own pace builds both muscles and confidence. Pushing the walker ahead provides support for those wobbly early steps, while the weight of the walker keeps it from rolling away too quickly. Loading blocks into the storage box, emptying it, and loading it again also encourages bending, carrying, and coordinating the whole body. The point is a solid, reliable tool the child can trust — not a flimsy toy that tips over.
What to look for:
- Stability first — a weighted base or wide stance keeps the walker from tipping when the child leans on it.
- Braked wheels or adjustable resistance, so the walker doesn't roll away too fast for a beginner.
- Solid wood and rubber-coated wheels for quieter, smoother movement across the floor.
- A handle at the right height that is easy to grip with both hands.
- A storage box to load and unload provides extra movement practice over time.
At home it works best on a non-slip floor with open space, where the child can push, stop, and turn at their own pace.
