World Flags on Stands
World flags on small stands make geography and cultures tangible and accessible. In Montessori, geography belongs to the cultural area of learning, and a flag collection gives children something to hold, sort by continent, and connect to maps, stories, and the food you make at home. Children practise recognising patterns, colours, and names — and discover that the world is big and full of people who live in wonderfully different ways. Around ages 6–9, a genuine interest in countries, capital cities, and distances often awakens, and flags become a natural gateway to curiosity rather than rote memorisation.
What to look for:
- Material: fabric flags on a wooden stick with a wooden base are preferable to thin plastic — they can withstand daily handling.
- Sturdy base: check that the base stands firmly and that the sticks are securely attached, so no small parts come loose.
- Sorted by continent: look for a set organised by region, ideally with a matching map mat included.
- Clear printing: make sure the flags are accurately and clearly printed — not faded or mirrored.
- Manageable quantity: one continent at a time works better than hundreds of flags all at once.
At home, you can place each flag on the correct continent on a map mat and talk about one country a week.
