Wooden Pull-Along Toy
When a child has just learned to walk, there is a strong inner drive to move forward towards a clear goal. A wooden pull-along toy on a string meets exactly that stage: the child holds the string, walks and feels the resistance, hears the wheels rolling and watches the toy follow along. It practises balance, walking rhythm and hand-eye coordination, as well as the sense of cause and effect — I pull, it comes. In Montessori thinking, freedom of movement is a foundation for independence, and a pull-along toy invites the child to explore the home on their own two feet.
What to look for:
- Material: solid wood with a smooth, non-toxic finish rather than lacquered plastic.
- The string: short and sturdy, ideally with a thick bead or ring at the end — easy to grip and harder to get tangled in.
- The wheels: should roll smoothly and sit firmly, with rounded edges and no small parts that can come loose.
- Size and weight: light enough to pull yet sturdy enough to hold up, sized for little hands.
- Quality: smooth surface with no splinters and robust fastenings that can handle door thresholds and stairs.
At home it works beautifully in the hallway or a room with open floor space where the child can walk back and forth at their own pace.
